22 Arrested After Teen Takeover Disrupts Curtis Hixon Park: Tampa Police

TAMPA, FL — Twenty-two people ages 12 to 21 were arrested after what the department described as “a teen takeover” Friday night at Curtis Hixon Park, according to a Tampa Police Department news release. (Watch police bodyworn-camera footage from the incident below.)

A large group of teens attempted a takeover in the downtown park area, causing disruptions, fights and other issues, police said.

Patrol officers, bike units and air service personnel responded to restore order and ensure the safety of the surrounding community, police said.

The department said the 22 people arrested face charges including affray, possession of narcotics, resisting without violence and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Officers also seized two firearms and one vehicle connected to the disturbance, according to the release.

"This type of reckless and criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our city," Chief Lee Bercaw said. "What began as a large gathering quickly escalated into disorder and activity that placed others at risk. Parents need to know where their children are and who they are with. Unfortunately, the poor decisions made by these 22 individuals last night could have lasting consequences that follow them well into adulthood. The Tampa Police Department remains committed to being one of the safest major cities in the nation, and we will continue taking strong enforcement action against anyone who threatens the peace and safety of our community."

While the names of the minors arrested Friday night were redacted after first being published by the department, police named the four adults arrested and their charges:

• Rodrico Boyd, 18, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia
• Don McAllister, 20, possession of cannabis under 20 grams, possession of cannabis sativa resin and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony
• Michael Ashford, 20, fleeing to elude and resisting an officer without violence
• Yarli Smith, 21, affray

Police said the growing takeover trend has become a concern for communities across the country as summer approaches.

The department pointed to local summer safety initiatives intended to keep young people engaged, connected and safe. Those programs include PAL's Midnight Basketball and Stay and Play, which the city said offer extended evening hours at select parks and opportunities for teens to gather, stay active, and connect with mentors during the summer months.
