Dangerous Heat Expected in Tampa Bay

Hot temperatures and high humidity are expected to create uncomfortable conditions for several days.

Tampa Bay area residents are being warned to take care when they venture outdoors as temperatures and humidity rise.

“Heat indices will climb to between 102 and 107 degrees this afternoon and this will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely,” the National Weather Service warned in its Hazardous Weather Outlook report Thursday. A combination of temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity levels are to blame for the potentially hazardous conditions, forecasters say.

While Thursday is likely to be the worst day for heat, forecasters say the Bay area won’t be out of the woods until early next week, the report indicated.

Those who go outdoors are advised to drink lots of fluids and avoid the sun.

“Take extra precautions if you work or spent time outdoors,” the report said. “When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”

Forecasters also suggest checking up on relatives or neighbors. Staying in air conditioned environments is advised.

High temperatures throughout the Tampa Bay area are expected to climb into the low- to mid-90s daily through Monday at least. Thunderstorm chances are also strong through the weekend.
