From computer classes to live performances, the John F. Germany Public Library in downtown provides a wide range of free events throughout the month.

Participants learn how to quickly turn their photos and videos into polished movies with Windows Live Movie Maker. They also learn how to add special effects, transitions, sound and captions, then share their movies directly on websites, such as YouTube and Facebook. For adults.

Black History Month: Civil Rights on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 3 p.m.
Notable folk and blues music duo Bill and Eli Perras present an inspiring one-hour song and story program in celebration of Black History Month. They intersperse original and traditional music and songs with stories of icons of the civil rights movement, such as Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Tuskegee Airmen, Harry T. Moore, Martin Luther King, Jr., and events that led up to the civil rights movement. For families.
World Slavery: The Haitian Revolution And The Rise Of American Music on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.
In honor of Black History Month, long-time professional musician Ray Kamalay traces the development of slavery from ancient times to its links with American society and into the early jazz age, putting American music in the perspective of world history. Discussion will include freedom, ancient and modern slavery, the Haitian Revolution, the origin of blackface, spirituals, blues, minstrel shows, ragtime and jazz. For adults.

In the Akan language of Ghana, the word and symbol Sankofa means to go back and retrieve.
