FLORIDA — The controversy continues over mandating masks in schools as Florida reports 17,506 new positive coronavirus cases in the past seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Especially worrisome for the parents of school-age students is their vulnerability to the delta variant of the coronavirus. During the past week, the Florida Department of Health reported that 26,475 children under the age of 12 tested positive for the coronavirus for a 19.4 positivity rate while 21,740 children age 12 to 19 tested positive for the virus for a 23.1 percent positivity rate, prompting school officials to close two schools in North Florida.
