Weekend Weather: Heat, Rain and Rip Currents

From the opening of bay scallop season and St. Pete Pride to fireworks in New Port Richey, there’s a busy weekend ahead for Tampa Bay.

But, will the weather cooperate?

According to the National Weather Service, it’s all going to depend on the day and the time. Here’s a look at the weekend forecast for the region:

Friday

  • High temperature: Low 90s
  • Low temperature – Upper 70s
  • Rain chances – About 40 percent

Saturday

  • High temperature – Low 90s
  • Low temperature – Upper 70s
  • Rain chances – About 20 percent

Sunday

  • High temperature – Around 90
  • Low temperature – Upper 70s
  • Rain chances – About 40 percent in the afternoon hours and 30 percent overnight

While thunderstorm chances are present throughout the weekend, forecasters say there is no significant severe weather anticipated. Storms that do develop, however, could deliver damaging winds and frequent lightning, the weather service noted in its Hazardous Weather Report.

A “persistent onshore flow” is being watched for the potential of increasing rip currents along the coastline late on Saturday and into Sunday. That means beachgoers are warned to pay close attention to lifeguard warnings as conditions on the water change.

Monday is expected to kick off with higher rain chances, around 50 percent, and a high around 90.
