'Zombie Cat' Update: How to Help Fund His Care

The Tampa cat was reportedly hit by a car, buried and then returned home five days later.

Bart, the Tampa cat who gained the national spotlight after his return from the “dead,” is on the mend.

That’s the latest from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay as that organization continues to provide care for the critter that required extensive surgery following his brush with death. Bart was reportedly struck by a car, buried by his owner and then is said to have returned to his neighborhood five days later.

The “risen” cat’s road to recovery has been rocky.

Earlier this week, he underwent surgery to remove an eye and repair a broken jaw. On Thursday, he had to have a blood transfusion to ease the effects of anemia, the agency reported on its blog.

Fundraising to offset the costs of Bart’s care is under way through the Humane Society’s Save-A-Pet Medical Fund. That fund, the agency reports, has already received a number of donations to help foot the bill while offsetting expenses related to other animals in the society’s care.

Bart’s eventual fate remains unclear. While the society is nursing him back to health, it announced Friday its intentions to not return Bart to his previous owner. The hope is Bart’s owner will surrender the cat “so that we can find an appropriate environment for him to live out his life,” the agency wrote in an official statement.
