St. Pete Fire Rescue members found the dead body after firefighters extinguished the car fire, said Yolanda Fernandez, public information officer with St. Petersburg Police Department.

Authorities said fire rescue responded to the fire shortly after 6 a.m. on the Skyway Trail.

Fernandez said the body and the car were both so badly burned that this early in the investigation it's hard to identify either. A forensics medical examiner will have to examine the body to determine the victim's identity and cause of death.

A lieutenant investigating the scene said the car is located exactly one mile from the 22nd Avenue South entrance of Twin Brooks Golf Course.

Investigators do not have a suspect at this time. Detectives are asking residents in the area if they have surveillance camera footage to share.
