GCAA ArtWorks

"The Dark Side of Art" explores how artists use unsettling themes to confront fears, psychological pain, and societal taboos. It bridges the gap between inner chaos and visual expression, revealing uncomfortable truths about human nature.​ Imagery in the artwork includes macabre and gothic, subconscious and trauma, the devil and evil, or a personal emotional struggle. 

This open call juried exhibition features artwork in various media, including sculpture, by 22 artists from Tampa Bay and beyond. The show runs from October 8 through November 7 during regular gallery hours: Thursday-Saturday 11am to 5pm.

A reception will be held on Saturday, October 10th
from 5 to 9pm during St. Pete’s second Saturday Art Walk. It will feature live Halloween themed music by Leon Barickman. A “Day of the Dead” celebration will be held on Sunday, November 1st from 3 to 6pm, including a costume contest.

GCAA ArtWorks is located at 5546 First Avenue, N, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. There is plenty of free parking and it is 2 blocks east of the SunRunner 58th Street stop.

Chinese Brush Painting is the foundation of all oriental brush arts. Painting in China is a way of life – and as such, it hails from the philosophies of Taoism and Confucianism. Nature and its grandeur is appreciated for its intangible spirituality.
In this beginner’s workshop, you will start by calming your spirit, thinking, and meditating about how you will paint the essence of your subject. Preparing yourself to paint, you will use “The Four Treasures”- brush, ink stick, ink stone, and rice paper- that have defined this art form for thousands of years.
You will find that Chinese Brush Painting is an enlightening practice in embracing change.
You will gain an overview of the history, philosophy, and aesthetic concepts, understand the proper selection, care, preparation, and use of traditional materials, and perform the basic skills and techniques for brush strokes.
Learn the basics of Chinese Brush Painting through hands-on instruction, complete compositions, handouts, and discussion. Mastery of the brush empowers artists of any medium.
Students will compose a Chrysanthemum that they learned during this workshop.
Note: Wear comfortable clothing. India ink is permanent, be careful so that you do not ruin your clothes.

Shapeshifter: New and Select Works by Palehorse is the distillation of 20 years of work by St. Petersburg based, multidisciplinary artist Chris Parks, and a glimpse into a new body of work that reveals his continued metamorphosis.
Shapeshifter traces the arc of a commercial illustrator who has worked with some of the world’s top brands, bands and cultural icons, and a studio artist and muralist who sees his personal work as a vehicle for sacred connection. In this new collection, Palehorse channels the transformative power of gods, guardians and totems to offer a mirror to the self, weaving together archetypes, sigils, symbols and sacred geometry.
In a retrospective spanning two decades of dedicated practice, Palehorse presents his creative journey through rock poster art, skateboard graphics, wrestling lore and apparel design, reimagined in new ways. He also explores long-imagined collaborations with friends such as Ben Venom, Morning Breath Inc, Masked Republic, Jon Stine and Bryan Nichols, whose influence has been enduring and foundational.
Shapeshifter is a continuum of becoming, a practice of reflection and an expression of gratitude.
About Palehorse
Palehorse is a traditional and digital artist known for his meticulous linework, vivid color palettes, and layered symbolic language. His work spans large-scale murals, gallery installations, identity and branding, print design and apparel.
His artwork has been commissioned by global brands including National Geographic, Nike, FX, Under Armour, PepsiCo and Hasbro, and exhibited in galleries internationally including the renowned Dalí Museum.
