American Stage Teen Summer Institute

American Stage Theatre Company presents five programs of theatrical experience for 13- to 17-year-olds. Designed for beginners as well as those with some performing experience, these programs range from one week to three weeks. Each focuses on the communication skills, leadership, creativity and other skills needed to produce a show for family and friends at the session’s end.

Prices range from $165 for a one-week program to $475 for a three-week program. Sign up for all five programs for $1,300, a tuition savings of $200. Payment plans are available.

  • June 11 to 22: “Show Choir Goes Broadway” Students will form their own summer show choir, with an emphasis on mastering complex harmonies, choreography, and “selling” a song. ($325)
  • June 25 to 29: “Improvisation” Develop humor and comic timing; learn how to think on your feet; and experience how an actor prepares for, motivates and listens within a scene developed in the moment. This program enhances and inspires creative thinking and communication skills. ($165)
  • July 2 to 20: “Musical Theatre: Fiddler on the Roof Jr.” Students work with university faculty and local professionals to refine their acting, singing and movement skills. Beginning with auditions all the way to the final performance, they’ll get a taste of a professional production. NOTE: There is no class on July 4. ($475)
  • July 23 to Aug. 4: “Original Performance Lab” Experience three great cultural organizations in one program.  Each student will write and perform a short one-person show inspired by either a piece of art or a historical moment. Students will travel to the Museum of Fine Arts and the St. Petersburg History Museum and be given personalized training to combine art, history and acting in an exciting and creative way. ($375)
  • Aug. 6 to 10: “No Fear Shakespeare” Students will immerse themselves in the language and stories of the most famous playwright of all time. They will learn how to approach the text as performers and find themselves in the stories. ($165)
