Foot and ankle expert joins Coastal Orthopedics team

Foot and ankle specialist Dr. Michael J. Shereff recently joined Coastal Orthopedics Sports Medicine and Pain Management.

Foot and ankle specialist Dr. Michael J. Shereff recently joined Coastal Orthopedics Sports Medicine and Pain Management, a comprehensive and full-service orthopedic, sports medicine and pain management practice.

Prior to Coastal Orthopedics, Dr. Shereff was the director of University of South Florida’s Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He was also a professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the school’s Morsani College of Medicine.

Dr. Shereff has a long and distinguished career in academic orthopedics, also serving as clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at The Medical University of South Carolina, associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine, along with several other posts at the university level. During his career, he has trained 45 fellows.

Dr. Shereff, who has authored over 60 peer-reviewed research papers about adult reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and a well-regarded textbook on foot and ankle surgery, will be providing treatment for foot and ankle conditions for patients at Coastal Orthopedics. He will serve patients at the Pointe West office in West Bradenton and at the Lakewood Ranch office.

For 12 years, Dr. Shereff was on the board of directors of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He served as president of that organization as well as president of the American Orthopaedic Foot Club.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and the American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Shereff is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

After a surgical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, Dr. Shereff completed an orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute in N.Y. and a fellowship at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn.
