Mayor Bars Donald Trump From City

The St. Petersburg leader says he's unsure of the 'dangerous threat posed by all Trumps.'

St. Petersburg, FL. - Donald Trump may be the Republican’s top contender for the presidential nomination, but he’s failed to impress St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.

Kriseman, in fact, took to Twitter Monday night to express his displeasure with the White House hopeful.

“I am hereby barring Donald Trump from entering St. Petersburg until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all Trumps,” Kriseman tweeted around 7 p.m. That tweet has since earned more than 8,600 likes and has been retweeted more than 7,400 times.

Kriseman’s comments came shortly after Trump issued a statement calling for the U.S. to issue a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what’s going on.” The statement was posted to Trump’s official campaign website.

“Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension,” Trump said in the statement. “Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.”

Whether Trump heard about Kriseman’s response to his call is unclear. He’s issued no statement and hasn’t responded to Kriseman’s tweet.

Plenty of others have responded to that tweet though.

“Looks like I found myself a tourist destination for Spring Break,” wrote one Twitter user.

“What you’re doing by rejecting the politics of fear is leadership,” wrote another.

Not everyone was happy with the mayor, however.

“Why don’t you just focus on STP (St. Petersburg),” a commenter asked. “As a STP business owner, we’re not much impressed with leadership.”

While the Republican field remains rather fluid, Trump does hold a steady lead, the Huffington Post reported Monday. The businessman with no political experience is up 33.9 percent to Ben Carson’s 14.6 percent, according to Post. Cruz is in third place at 13.8 percent, despite polls that say he will come out on top in Iowa. He’s trailed by Macro Rubio at 13.7 percent and Jeb Bush at 4.5 percent. Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, Rand Paul, John Kasich and Mike Huckabee are all running with under 3 percent support.
