The inspiration of the show comes from “how to Do florida” host Chad Crawford and his passion to conserve Florida’s water. Almost half of the state’s water consumption goes on yards. With 15 million new residents in the next 54 years, it is time to address this problem now! Through this one-of-a-kind new series, Crawford is inviting residents to tackle the challenge. It starts with you!
Crawford’s crew filmed a pilot episode that was also part of the most recent season of “how to Do florida.” In that episode, the crew flipped a yard owned by the Volkmann family in the Bradenton area by removing all landscaping and replacing it with Florida-friendly landscaping and grass. “When we are done with a yard, we’ll see that homeowner using 70 percent less water and 50 percent less chemicals, and that will save them money and more importantly, it’s good for Florida,” Crawford added.

“One of my favorite parts of my new yard is the beautiful wildflowers that attract all of the colorful butterflies,” said resident Berni Volkmann and recipient of a Florida yard makeover in Bradenton. “It is also a relief to not have to keep up with weeding and other maintenance and to know that my yard is great for the environment,” she added. “I just love it!”
Just like Berni, you too can have a chance for your Florida Yard to be flipped. The production company is looking for yards to feature for the new series. There is no prequalification and all yards will be considered. Simply fill out the request form here. Please do not submit your yard more than once.
The show will be broadcast in syndication on local affiliates throughout the state of Florida beginning in the spring of 2017.
Partnership for the series includes the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, St. John’s Water Management District, FANN, FNGLA and the Florida Irrigation Society. “Alachua County has several public springs and other resources that are in danger, due to polluted runoff entering our aquifer. For this reason, we are thrilled to have ‘Flip My Florida Yard’ come to Alachua County, as the program really embraces the principles of converting intensive landscapes to ones that need a lot less chemicals and water. We have to act now, so we can preserve the natural beauty of our state for generations to come!”- Stacie Greco, Water Conservation Coordinator at Alachua County Environmental Protection Department.
"One of the great benefits of living in Florida is our year-round ability to enjoy our state’s natural beauty, but that way of life is being threatened. We must make better choices as Floridians. ‘Flip My Florida Yard’ brings tips and expert knowledge we can all use in our own landscapes. We couldn't be more excited to be part of this effort!”- Jennifer Nelis, Director of Communications and Marketing at Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA).
“We love Chad Crawford, and Flip My Florida Yard is a timely, and fantastic opportunity for us to express our love and contribute to the Authentic Florida that we have enjoyed for so many years through Florida-friendly landscaping. FANN members were honored to serve in the first pilot episode, showcasing some of our native plants and landscaping that compliment this new movement.
