Pier Park Opponents: Fruitful Discussion or Sour Grapes?

Let's move forward with The Pier Park.

Here we go again. After much public input, the formation of a pier selection committee, and a thorough review of several submitted designs, a new pier has been chosen and the usual suspects oppose. Why? Because it doesn’t look like the only pier they will accept – another inverted pyramid or a facsimile thereof.

Opponents reasons are petty and familiar. They basically boil down to this: The city has conspired to demolish their sacred pyramid. Again, they complain about nearly everything the new pier has or doesn’t have, and list everything that could possibly go wrong. One of their complaints is an oldie but goodie: “the pelicans will poop on it”.

It’s time to move on and build a new pier for our city. Opponents lament the demise of what they feel is a city icon. But it is the pier itself that is our city icon, in its various forms throughout St. Petersburg’s history. A fresh and new design, built for the new St. Petersburg, The Pier Park will be an exciting addition to our waterfront.

Environmentally conscience, including Leed certified, The Pier Park is family-friendly with multiple uses along the entire pier for all ages. Learn more about this new design at the city’s website and the Facebook page “We Love Pier Park”. The Pier Park – Let’s Build It!
