Plastic surgery of the buttocks growing in popularity

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 16, 2016)—Data recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows a marked increase in plastic surgery procedures involving the buttocks.

Buttock augmentations with fat grafting – commonly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift – increased 28 percent from 2014 to 2015. ASPS’s report shows that 14,705 of these procedures were performed in the U.S. last year. In addition, 4,767 buttock implant procedures were performed in 2015, which was a 36 percent increase from the previous year.

“The popularity of buttocks enhancement has been accelerated by certain Hollywood role models,” said Christian Drehsen, M.D., Medical Director of Clinique of Plastic Surgery, based in St. Petersburg, Fla. “Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and others well known for their derrieres are inspiring many to pursue augmentations and lifts of the buttocks to achieve a fuller, sleeker, more lifted look.”

The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure involves taking fat from other parts of the body, purifying it and then re-injecting it into the buttocks with blunt-tip needles to disperse aspirated fat cells. This re-inflates and uplifts descended tissue.

Most plastic surgeons opt to remove fat from the area of the back just above the butt, the stomach and the thighs. An added benefit of this procedure is that it combines liposuction with contouring, which can change the outline of the body dramatically.

“Restoration of a nice hip curve by using fat suctioning, judiciously coupled with fat injections in the upper buttocks, has transformed liposuction into true lipo-sculpture,” said Dr. Drehsen.

The Brazilian Butt Lift has a low risk of infection. Because the plastic surgeon is using purified fat from the patient’s own body, there are no risks related to inserting foreign items that could lead to rejections and other issues.

“Recovery is rapid and uneventful, but requires some padding in the patient’s sleeping position for about three weeks,” said Dr. Drehsen.
