Scott, Nelson To Debate For 1st Time Tonight In Miramar

Voters will have the chance to see the candidates for Florida's U.S. Senate seat debate face to face for the first time tonight.

MIRAMAR, FL -- They've been debating for months through the media. Now, voters will have the chance to see the candidates for Florida's U.S. Senate seat debate face to face for the first time tonight.

Telemundo 51 will host Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in its studio, 15000 S.W. 27th St., Miramar.

The debate will be taped at 11 a.m. and will be aired at 7 p.m. in Spanish on Telemundo stations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Fort Myers, Tampa and West Palm Beach and across the stations’ digital and mobile platforms. Additionally, the debate will be streamed in English at nbcmiami.com.

Tonight's debate is the first of two debates between Scott and longtime incumbent Nelson before the Nov. 6 general election. The second will take place Oct. 16 on CNN.

The hot-button topics are expected to be the impact of red tide, which has been wreaking havoc on Gulf beaches, and school safety in the wake of the Feb. 14 shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

According to RealClearPolitics.com, Nelson is currently leading in the polls by 1 point but a Florida Atlantic University poll puts Scott ahead by 1 point.
