St. Pete Officials Say Reclaimed Water Leak No Threat

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- About 120,000 gallons of fully treated reclaimed-quality water leaked from an 8-inch distribution main that was broken by a contractor during work on a storm drain project near the intersection of 34th Avenue and Poplar Street Northeast.

The unauthorized discharge - which was caused as the contractors worked to remove dirt around the reclaimed water main - lasted about 20 minutes just after noon Wednesday, May 2. There was no water contained on site, and most of the 120,000 gallons that was discharged went into the waters of Smacks Bayou.

Environmental Compliance Division staff will take samples from those nearby waters to determine any potential impact. Results from that testing will be posted on the Recreational Water Quality page.
