A 16-year-old boy has been charged in the Monday carjacking in St. Petersburg that left a woman injured.

St. Petersburg, FL — St. Petersburg Police say the 16-year-old boy wanted in connection with a Monday carjacking outside a Wawa has been brought into custody.

According to the agency, the newly formed Habitual Offender Monitoring Enforcement Unit located the teen suspected in the crime and brought him into custody late Wednesday night. The teen now faces carjacking charges following the incident.

The crime in question occurred around 11:15 a.m. July 11 as a 54-year-old woman was putting air into her car’s rear left tire. She was at the Wawa, 24654 22nd Ave. N., when she noticed a boy get into her driver’s seat, an email from police said.

The woman confronted the teen, but he punched her and knocked her to the ground. When she fell to the ground, police said, the teen drove off in her car and ran over her foot.

The teen initially rode up to the Wawa on a bicycle. Police released surveillance of him on the bike earlier this week.

While the boy has been identified, according to police, the car has not been recovered. It is a white 2012 Scion XD hatchback.

No further information is available at this time. Police have not released the teen’s name.
