ST. PETERSBURG, FL — St. Petersburg received four proposals to redevelop an 86-acre portion of the Historic Gas Plant District that is currently home to Tropicana Field, according to a city news release.

In response to a request for proposals to reimagine the area, 50 Plus 1 Sports, Hines & Tampa Bay Rays, Restoration Associates, and Sugar Hill Community Partners submitted proposals for the development of the area by the Friday morning deadline.

Mayor Kenneth T. Welch thanked the four companies “for their diligent efforts to submit proposals that will fuel inclusive progress and equitable development for future generations who will live, visit and do business in our city.”

When reviewing the proposals, city staff will have “a keen eye on their interpretation of affordable and workforce housing; office and meeting space; arts and culture; research, innovation, and education; recreation; open space, healthy and sustainable development; and intentional equity,” the mayor added. “We look forward to engaging the community as we determine the future of this historically and economically vital part of St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay Region."

The RFP, which was issued Aug. 26, called for an emphasis on equitable redevelopment and 17.3 acres dedicated to a baseball stadium, as well as a focus on affordable and workforce housing.

Once city staff determines all four proposals are ADA compliant, they’ll be posted on the city website.

A community presentation on the proposals will take place Jan. 4 at The Coliseum. Each proposer will provide an overview of their respective plan.

Welch will announce which proposal was chosen for the site during his first State of the City address at the end of January.
