Medication-Assisted Treatment Helps People Recover Safely in Palm Beach County

People struggling with addiction can access medication-assisted treatment, considered the gold standard for alcohol and opioid addiction.

Medication-assisted treatment, known as MAT, is gaining attention as one of the most effective ways to treat substance use disorders, particularly opioid and alcohol addiction. Yet some people dismiss it, saying MAT simply swaps one drug for another. But addiction specialists say this is a misconception.

The Haven Detox - West Palm Beach offers MAT as part of a comprehensive approach to recovery. “Medication-assisted treatment entails using FDA-approved medications under medical supervision to stabilize brain chemistry, reduce cravings,” said Dr. Rostislav Ignatov, chief medical officer at The Haven Detox - West Palm Beach. “When used correctly, these medications save lives.”

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization all classify MAT as the gold standard for treating opioid use disorder. Studies link it to fewer overdose deaths, better retention in treatment and stronger outcomes for long-term recovery.

The Haven Detox - West Palm Beach medical staff administers medications such as buprenorphine, clonidine or lofexidine to manage opioid withdrawal. Lorazepam may be used to keep patients calm and prevent seizures during alcohol detox. Anti-craving medications are also available to support long-term sobriety.

Access to MAT remains limited nationwide because relatively few providers can prescribe medications like buprenorphine or naltrexone. However, directories show there are several treatment centers in South Florida offering MAT, often paired with therapy and counseling.

Medication is just one part of a personalized treatment plan at The Haven Detox - West Palm Beach. The facility also offers a full range of treatment options, including therapy, peer support and IV therapy to rehydrate the body and replenish vitamins and minerals depleted by substance use. The center also uses GeneSight testing, which analyzes a patient’s genetic profile to help clinicians choose the most effective medications for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. “If we can tailor a medication plan to a patient’s unique biology, we can speed up stabilization and reduce the frustration of trial-and-error prescribing,” Dr. Ignatov explained.

“Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all,” Dr. Ignatov added. “Our goal is to stabilize patients quickly, give them the tools they need to feel better and then help them build a sustainable path forward.”
