'Extremely Dangerous' Tornado Touches Down In Damascus, Georgia

An 'extremely dangerous' tornado touched down at 4:45 p.m. Monday northeast of Damascus, flattening homes in its path, said the NWS.

DAMASCUS, GA — What the National Weather Service called an "extremely dangerous" tornado touched ground at 4:45 p.m. Monday just northeast of Damascus, Georgia, according to the agency.

"Seek shelter NOW if you are in the Tornado Warning" area, tweeted the National Weather Service Tallahassee bureau.

The National Weather Service retweeted photos from residents in the Damscus area that showed homes and trees flattened to the ground. There was an unconfirmed report on Twitter that someone was injured in the tornado, but more information was not immediately available.

As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, the Nat'l Weather Service said conditions are slowly improving across the area, "but the possibility for a tornado/severe-storm still remains as watch is in effect until 10 p.m. ET. However, as soon as the main line is past, the main threat for storms is over."

Damascus is in the flat, panhandle area of southwest Georgia, bordering the Florida panhandle.
