GA Officer, Good Samaritans Save Mother And Son Before SUV Fire

The mother and son were involved in a three-car crash and were trapped inside of their smoking SUV, which caught fire, media reports say.

ROME, GA — A Rome police officer is being credited with saving a mother and son Wednesday before their SUV exploded into flames after a three-car pileup, according to media reports.

Atlanta News First identified the officer as Dow Turrentine, who was assisting with a nearby traffic stop when he heard the crash at Highway 411 and Mathis Road.

According to media reports, two Good Samaritans helped Turrentine rescue the mother and son who were trapped in their smoking SUV moments before it fully caught fire. The mother and son are now recovering.

The Rome News-Tribune spoke with the mother, who expressed appreciation for the officer and Good Samaritans.

“We’re just incredibly grateful,” she told the local newspaper. “It was just a pure blessing that they were there.”

Her son reportedly suffered a bump on his head and was cleared by emergency room personnel while she was scheduled to undergo knee surgery Thursday.

Rome Police shared on Facebook that they are glad the duo is safe.
