ISRAEL — Georgia Sen. Russ Goodman, vacationing in Israel with his mother, says they both are "safe and being well taken care of" amid Israel's war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Goodman, a Republican based in south Georgia, took to his Facebook page Sunday to ask people to pray for the people of Israel and those fighting to defend the nation.

U.S. President Joe Biden said Monday at least 11 Americans have died in the war, which he called "heart wrenching." He said some Americans are unaccounted for, their whereabouts unknown.

"I can unequivocally tell you this, the Israeli government and their people love America, and while I’ve always felt a close kinship with our Israeli brothers and sisters, the last two days has reinforced that feeling in ways that are hard to describe," he said in the Facebook post.

"I’ll update everyone as things progress, but I can tell you that both representatives from the state and federal level, as well as the Israeli government have been in contact with me, and I am beyond grateful for all their concerns for our safety and everything they have done to ensure it. I ask everyone to please pray for the people of Israel and the brave men and women currently fighting to defend their homeland. The Israeli people know that America stands with them, and they have in turn stood with us and by us as we are their guests during these unprecedented times. May God grant a swift victory to the Israeli Defense Forces so that peace will once again reign over the land that Jesus once walked."

Goodman said during his visit he and his mother have cruised across the Sea of Galilee and have stood on top of Mount Precipice and Mount Carmel.

"Lord knows my life is busy, but I will forever be grateful that I had the good sense to accept my mom’s invitation to make this journey with her. I’ve always been told that at the end of one’s life, it’s the things that you didn’t do that you regret. I’m glad this won’t be one of mine," Goodman said in a separate post on Facebook.
