Georgia Woman Dies After Falling From Maine Cliff Walk

Romona Gowens of Calhoun, Georgia, fell near Scarborough after the railing she was leaning on broke, police said.

SCARBOROUGH, ME — A Georgia woman was killed Monday when she fell 30 feet from the edge of a cliff walk in Maine, according to authorities and a report.

Romona Gowens, 54, of Calhoun, Georgia, fell from a cliff walk in Scarborough's Prouts Neck after the railing she was leaning on broke, the Scarborough Police Department said in a news release. The fall happened shortly before 10:30 a.m.

According to police, Gowens was unable to call 911 after the fall. Authorities were eventually contacted with the help of a local fisherman and the victim's sister.

First responders eventually reached Gowens and took her to Maine Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries, 11 Alive reported.

Police said there was no evidence of foul play. The accident remains under investigation.
