After the primary was first postponed from its original date of March 24 because of the coronavirus pandemic, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced that all registered voters would be mailed a form that could be used to request an absentee ballot. Since then, his office has received at least a million requests — and he expects more.
"Our goal was twofold: to keep voters safe and to take the pressure off our in-person voting locations," Raffensperger told WSB-TV Action News.
The Georgia Secretary of State's office shows about 7 million registered voters on its website. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported in February — well before the lockdown forced by the pandemic — that registrations already were up 3 percent from the same time the previous year. The newspaper also reported a 68% jump in registrations among voters aged 18-34 since October 2016. That age group is now almost a third of all registered voters.
