National Voter Registration Day: What To Know In Georgia

Metro Atlanta communities are working to register eligible voters Tuesday, but today is not the last day to register. Here's what to know.

GEORGIA — It is that time of the year when voters are gearing up for the November municipal elections, but do not worry if you are not registered to vote - you still have time.

Voter drives are being held Tuesday across metro Atlanta in recognition of National Voter Registration Day, which organizers say is a nonpartisan civic holiday that was established in 2012.

According to its website, organizations and volunteers nationwide are working to get eligible voters registered and create awareness of voting registration opportunities.

The Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration office is hosting a drive until 4 p.m. at 995 Roswell St. in Marietta.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported Clark Atlanta University, Booker T. Washington High School and MARTA stations in College Park, Five Points and North Springs were hosting drives.

The voter registration deadline in Georgia is Oct. 10 for the general municipal and special election, as well as and the runoff election, per Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office.

As you prepare to head to the polls, Patch has compiled key dates and facts to know, per Georgia officials.

Who can vote in Georgia?

  • A person who is a citizen of the U.S.
  • A person who is a legal resident of their county.
  • A person who is at least age 17 1/2 to register and age 18 to vote.
  • A person who is not serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude.
  • A person who has not been found mentally incompetent by a judge.

Where can you apply to vote?

If not at one of the various drives being held in the metro, a person can register to vote either online through Raffensperger's office or by mail.

To vote online, a person must have a valid driver's license or an identification card that has been issued by the Department of Driver Services.

A downloadable application is available both on the Georgia state website and the SOS website. Applications can be delivered to your local county voter registration office.

Important dates to know

  • Oct. 10: Last day to register to vote
  • Oct. 16: In-person and absentee early voting starts for the general election
  • Oct. 21 and Oct. 28: Saturday voting available for the general election
  • Oct. 27: Last day to request an absentee ballot for the general election
  • Nov. 7: Election Day
  • Dec. 5: Special election runoff
