WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Drew Ferguson, the Republican congressman for Georgia's District 3, announced Thursday that he will not seek re-election in 2024.

Ferguson, a West Point native who has served the House since January 2017, said representing the third congressional district "has been the honor of a lifetime." The district serves several counties from portions of south metro Atlanta to areas near Columbus.

"Georgia is truly a special place, and it’s calling us home," Ferguson said. "Julie and I look forward to spending more time with our children and grandchildren while continuing to work to keep Georgia the best state in America to live and do business."

Ferguson said during his tenure he has served on the Ways and Means Committee, where he has been able to focus on tax, trade and health-care issues. The congressman has served as the House's chief deputy whip from 2018-2022 and on the Budget Committee, he said.

"I’ve also been proud to advance policies addressing antimicrobial resistance and the battle we are facing with a mental health crisis," Ferguson said.

Shortly after flipping his vote for Speaker of the House in October, Ferguson said he and his family began receiving death threats. Rather than voting for U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan as planned, Ferguson opted to choose Majority Leader Steve Scalise for the role left vacant by the ousting of U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

Ferguson attended the University of Georgia in Athens and was accepted early into the Medical College of Georgia, according to his biography. He graduated with a dental medicine degree and returned to West Point, where he opened a family dental practice.

In 2008, Ferguson was elected mayor of West Point ahead of his journey as a congressman.
