Stealth Local Knitters Needed by Special Olympics

Are you a closet crocheter? A nifty knitter? The Linus Project and the Georgia Special Olympics needs your yarn bombing talents!

Special Olympics needs scarves for each Olympian

Are you a closet crocheter? A nifty knitter? Are you addicted to reading The Friday Night Knitting Club? Then The Linus Project (GA) and the Georgia Special Olympics needs your yarn bombing talents to produce over 2,000 scarves for the up-coming Special Olympics to be held in January 2012.

Last year I made six scarves in a bright red and white stripped pattern that went to The Linus Project. It was fun busywork that I made in my spare time, usually as I was watching a favorite movie on the couch with my husband and kids.

The Linus Project (GA) just announced the new color scheme for crafty knitters to make for 2012 so that every “Olympian” is blanketed with love in Cobb County next year. The new scarves should be made out of blue and red. According to Marleen at NW Atlanta Project Linus, “For those of you that like to make the scarves for the Special Olympics, the official colors have been announced. They are:

  • Red Heart Super Saver Cherry Red 0319
  • Red Heart Super Saver Soft Navy 0387
  • Red Heart Soft Navy 4604
  • Red Heart Really Red 9925

They would like to have a combination of red and navy on every scarf.”

Please let Project Linus (GA) know how many scarves you’ll be able to donate before the deadline as it helps them with planning. Project Linus (GA) just celebrated a 10th anniversary and has delivered 23,000 blankets to children in hospitals, shelters and who are children of veterans of the war. "Special Olympics Georgia received 1960 scarves for children and adults with intellectual disabilities that were attending Indoor Winter Games in Cobb County in January 2011," said Jennifer Daniell, Grants & Events Manager at Special Olympics Georgia. "The scarves came from many states and cities all over Georgia! They were definitely a blessing of warmth and good wishes from the community."

The Special Olympics Movement transforms communities by inspiring people to open their minds, to accept and include people with intellectual disabilities, celebrating differences and recognizing similarities we all share! Thank you to the Project Linus for contributing over 380 scarves to the project! You ladies are truly generous souls! Next year we will ask for scarves in red and navy—which the other states are doing as well.  Colors can be found at http://scarvesforspecialolympics.org/

Contact Jennifer, as she is the liaison for the scarf project for January 2012 Special Olympics!
