City of Acworth Announces Calendar of Upcoming Events

Several family-friendly celebrations and events are coming to the city in the next weeks and months, including the Taste of Acworth.

Taste of Acworth - The 10th Annual Taste of Acworth will take place in the Historic District on Main Street, Saturday, October 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Acworth Business Association and the City of Acworth sponsor this popular event every year that benefits numerous local schools and charities in our community. Approximately 20,000 visitors tasted their way through this collection of delicacies last year.

The event will host 150 booths from local restaurants and businesses demonstrating what they do best. There will be two entertainment stages providing live music and demonstrations from local talent throughout the day. Children will have plenty to do with inflatables, quad bungee, and challenging games located in the kid zone.

Admission is FREE! An array of diverse restaurants will be offering food samples from $1.00 to $4.00 to satisfy every palate. Parking will be available throughout town. Come hungry, bring the kids, and join in the fun!

Acworth Halloween JamBOOree! - Come out to Logan Farm Park for a spooky good time. The event will be held on Saturday, October 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. For a minimal charge each child can participate in many different games and activities where they can win candy and prizes. There will also be a costume contest that is broken up into different age groups. Parking is limited. Parking will be available at Logan Farm Park, Roberts School and the corner of Cherokee Street and Northside Drive.

Halloween Historic Downtown Acworth Classic Car Cruise – On Saturday, October 25, the city will host a Classic Car Cruise in Downtown Acworth. The event will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown Acworth. The Lake City Cruisers partner with the city and the downtown Acworth merchants to hold these Classic Car Cruises. The event is free to the public. A $2 entry fee is requested for all vehicles in the cruise. All proceeds go to the Horizon Field, an all-inclusive special needs sports facility in Acworth. Bring the entire family to this Halloween themed evening of fun!

6th Annual Acworth Turkey Chase 5K Fun Run & 2K Walk - Saturday, November 22, 2014 - Save the date for this annual Thanksgiving season tradition, presented by the City of Acworth Parks, Recreation and Community Resource Department! In the past five years you have helped us collect over 10,000 non-perishable food items that have gone to help stock local food pantries during the holiday season!

All non-perishable food items are to benefit the Tackle Hunger Program.

Enjoy an exhilarating 5K run through Historic Downtown Acworth and along the shores of beautiful Lake Acworth. Walk, jog, or run, participants of all ages and abilities are welcome.

Registration for the Untimed Fun Run for age 13 and over is $10 before noon on November 2 or $20 on the day of the race. Registration for the Untimed Fun Run for kid’s age 6 to12 is $5 before noon on November 19 or $10 on the day of the race. Kids 5 & under are free.

There is a Timed Run for participants 10 years old and up, the cost of the Timed Run is $20 before noon on November 19. All participants must bring a non-perishable food item on race day to receive their race number and Acworth Turkey Chase t-shirt. The 5K Fun Run will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the 2K walk at 9:15 a.m. on Main Street in Downtown Acworth. There will be a “Little Pilgrim” Trot for children up to age 5 beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Main Street.

Acworth Craft Beer Festival - Save the Date: The First Annual Historic Downtown Acworth Craft Beer Festival will take place on Saturday, November 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Senator Russell Avenue. In the coming weeks, all details pertaining to this event, such as ticket info, parking, etc. will be posted here, as well as www.atlantabeerfestivals.com.

2014 Veterans Day Ceremony: Join the City of Acworth on Tuesday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Patriots Point at Cauble Park, home of the Veterans Memorial to honor our nation’s veterans. The City of Acworth would like to say thank you to those who have faithfully served their country as well as those who are now serving. Acworth is honored to have these brave men and women living in our community and what better way to honor them than to host a Veterans Day Ceremony.

If you have not seen the Veterans Memorial at Patriot’s Point at Cauble Park, make sure you visit us on November 11. The service flags of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Cost Guard surround the American Flag. The concrete dome structure is surrounded by a paver walkway with engraved pavers. You can still honor a veteran by purchasing Pavers. The pavers are available in 4x4 or 8x8 sizes. With the 4x4, you get 3 lines, each with up to 18 characters engraved on the pavers. The 8x8 comes with 4 lines, each with up to 18 characters engraved on it. All pavers purchased before October 1, 2013 will be in the ground for the November 11 ceremony.

Community Classes

Bricks for Kidz - Acworth Parks and Recreation is now offering Bricks 4 Kidz, a program where students build machines, vehicles, buildings and other structures using LEGOs based on proprietary model plans while learning the fundamentals of math, science and language arts. This class is for ages 7 to 13 and is held at the Roberts School Community Center on Thursday’s from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Classes run from October 29 – November 19. Tai Chi - The Acworth Parks and Recreation Department offers three levels of Tai Chi. Our Beginners Classes are Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., Intermediate Classes are Mondays at 6:30 p.m., and Advanced Tai Chi Classes are Mondays at 7:30 p.m. All classes are taught by Phil Robinson and his certified instructors. All classes are held at the Roberts School Community Center in Acworth. If you are unsure of which class you should be in please contact the Acworth Parks and Recreation Department at 770-917-1234 and we will help you contact the instructor. Classes will begin on October 6. The cost for this 2 month session is $100 for City residents and $105 for non-City residents. Register today at www.acworthparksandrecreation.org!

Athletics

Acworth Youth Basketball League - The Acworth Parks, Recreation and Community Resource Department is pleased to announce that registration for the Acworth Youth basketball League is now open! This year all participants will take home elite basketball uniforms, a draw string bag, and a participation award! The league is open to both girls and boys, ages 5 to 14, with a 5 & 6 co-ed instructional division. The fee for the league is as follows:

5 & 6 co-ed: Residents $105, Non-residents: $125
All Other Divisions: Residents $155, Non-residents $175

All divisions are open until the maximum number of participants per age group has been met. THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17. (All registrations received after 5:00 p.m. on October 17 will be charged a $20 late registration fee.)
