GEMA Director to Resign, National Guard General is Replacement

The head of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), who was roundly criticized for the poor response to the winter storm in January of 2014 which crippled most of Georgia, is resigning.

Charley English will be replaced by National Guard Adjutant General Jim Butterworth as the head of the agency once the former’s resignation is official, WSB-TV reported Monday afternoon.

According to his official biography, English was appointed GEMA’s director in 2006, and has a master’s degree in homeland defense and security from the Naval Postgraduate School and a bachelor’s degree in public and urban affairs from Georgia State University.

It is not yet known when English will step down.
