Seven "Homicide-Related" Undocumented Immigrants Released in Atlanta Area

A Cobb County immigrants rights activist says that those released are not necessarily murderers.

Seven undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of “homicide-related” crimes but have completed their sentences have been released into the Atlanta area, WSB-TV reports.

According to a Department of Homeland Security report, the government released 36,000 undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of crimes into the general public in 2013. 169 of those were convicted of homicide-related offenses such as manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and murder. Of those, 131 have been issued a final notice of deportation from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Seven of the ex-cons labeled as homicide-related offenders have relocated to the Atlanta area, listing addresses in Fulton, Gwinnett, Coweta, and Cobb counties with ICE. ICE has been forced to release these people as they have served out their sentences and the Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot be held indefinitely.

U.S. Senate candidate David Perdue called the measure “unacceptable,” while Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren said the news “disgusted” him.

Rich Pellegrino, spokesman for the Cobb Immigrant Alliance, hopes to remind metro residents that the released ex-cons have served out their sentences and should be allowed to integrate into their communities. Pellegrino added that the designation “homicide-related” does not mean that all of the seven are convicted killers.
