Weatherford Wins Runoff, North Wins Election

The former Acworth alderman faces one more election cycle, while his successor in City Hall has been chosen.

The City of Acworth's former Post 3 Alderman is one step closer to being elected to the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

Bob Weatherford, who served on the Acworth Board of Aldermen for a dozen years, has defeated former County Commissioner Bill Byrne in the Republican primary runoff to earn nomination for the commission's open District 1 seat in the November elections.

Weatherford retired from his position in Acworth in February, preparing to run for the District 1 seat being vacated by the retiring commissioner, Helen Goreham,

In the May 20 Republican primary election, Weatherford and Byrne were the two most successful candidates on the ballot, but neither won a majority.

15,483 Cobb County District 1 voters cast ballots in the July 22 runoff, and 9,523 of those voters chose Weatherford over Byrne. Weatherford will now square off against Democratic candidate Derrick Crump in the November election.

During Tuesday's election, Acworth voters also voted on the man who would succeed Weatherford on the Board of Aldermen.

Brett North was elected over Kevin Wigington to take over Weatherford's seat in a race that saw only 1,257 votes cast. Each of those votes mattered, however, as North's margin of victory was only 55.

North spent nine years on the city's planning and zoning board, and currently serves as the outpatient clinic manager at Life University. Wigington is the secretary-treasurer of the Acworth Historic Preservation Commission and operates the Brookwood Christian School.
