Plans call for extending the Greenway from Marconi Drive to Union Hill Park.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The city of Alpharetta has taken another step in extending its popular Big Creek Greenway further to the north. The City Council at its Nov. 27 meeting approved a contract with Pond & Company to perform the design work on the proposed extension. The Council voted unanimously to approve the design contract in an amount not to exceed $407,425.

The proposal calls for extending the Greenway from its current terminus at Marconi Drive to the north at Union Hill Park. Services performed by Pond & Company will include the design of bridges to go over creeks, tunnels under roads and elevated structures to traverse wetlands.

Opportunities will also be identified along the trail for creek and wetland overlooks, seating areas, passive parks and other enhancements that would incorporate existing natural elements to bolster to user experience along the trail. Once Alpharetta staff members provide a notice to proceed, the design work is expected to take nine to 12 months to complete.

The Big Creek Greenway, a concrete trail, is about 8 miles and runs along the waterway bearing its name from Mansell Road on the south end to Marconi Drive just east of Windward Parkway to the north. A soft mulch trail encircles a large wetland between Haynes Bridge and Mansell roads. Wildlife such as blue heron, deer, ducks and Canadian geese can be observed in this preserved water setting.
