Boomerang 2 Positivity, reduce anxiety at school through volunteering

Volunteering is a proven coping tool for teens to combat anxiety and depression. Imagine if there was a quick break where a student can lift themselves up, by lift up someone else while at school? “Boomerang to Positivity” is a mini mental health break that students can bounce back by doing something good for someone else.

Sofia created this concept as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project and launched the community service opportunity at Cambridge High School’s Bridge to Service volunteer days. Students originally painted inspirational signs for Camp Twin Lakes, ultimately creating over 200 signs for their new Rutledge West Campus, that will serve over 3,000 special neeeds kids as they experience their unique and innovative camp that can serve kids with varied needs and abilities!

Because anxiety is a growing teen epidemic, most schools have a quiet room for kids to decompress and offer coloring pages or something similar. It’s been reported that students sometimes drag out their coloring and end up missing class. Boomerang 2 Positivity projects are short, have an end goal and hopefully will be a chance for a job well-done and boost mood!

The ongoing volunteer based crafts can include:

• Camp Mail-day cards & letters
• Kindness bracelets made of simple large beads that are in a kit format
• Gratitude Chain to create around the school once a year.
