Burn Ban Goes Into Effect May 1 In Milton
The Milton Fire Marshal is urging residents to observe the burn ban for their safety and the air quality.
MILTON, GA — Milton Fire Marshal Matt Marietta would like to remind the community that the the state-issued burn ban goes into effect on Wednesday, May 1.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has identified open burning as a significant contributor of the pollutants that form ozone. Therefore, open burning in metro Atlanta and the surrounding areas is restricted during the summer months. From May 1 through Sept. 30, the burn ban is enforced in 54 Georgia counties, including in Milton and the rest of Fulton County.
The burn ban prohibits the burning of yard and land-clearing debris. Additionally, burning in non-agricultural areas of the city or the burning of treated wood, garbage, construction debris, and other non-vegetative items is always prohibited, regardless of the burn ban.

Violators of the summer burn ban will not only enact a local fire department response to put out the fire, but may also face fines, Marietta said in a release.
Outdoor fireplaces and other types of fire pits are allowed if constructed and located properly. If in doubt, contact the Milton Fire Department at 678-242-2541 or at fire.marshal@cityofmiltonga.us.

This policy is intended to heighten fire safety during the hot summer months, and to reduce unnecessary airborne pollutants during a time period when air quality concerns are at their peak.
