Fall, Winter Lawn Care Workshop Set For Wednesday

The free seminar will be held at the Alpharetta Public Works Department.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Lawns add beauty and value to any property; but, often homeowners have questions about the proper way to achieve great looking, healthy lawns in Georgia’s clay soil.

This is where the city of Alpharetta will come in and help you navigate these problems. The city and the Alpharetta Natural Resources Commission will host a free class on lawn care for homeowners at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7.

The class will be held at the city's Public Works Department at 1790 Hembree Road.

To have a beautiful lawn next year, you need to start now, in the fall. Early fall is the only effective time of year to re-seed or plant cool-season grasses (Fescue). If you have a warm-season grass (Bermuda and Zoysia), you need to take steps to prevent winter weed grasses from taking over. Even if someone else takes care of your lawn, this seminar will enable you to work with your lawn service more effectively.

This free class, conducted by the UGA/Fulton County Cooperative Extension and the North Fulton Master Gardeners, will cover:

  • Warm-season vs. cool-season grasses
  • Importance of soil testing
  • Adjusting pH
  • Fall/winter activities for each type of grass
  • Spring/summer to-do lists
  • Lawn health
