Three teams from Fulton Science Academy Private School were selected to advance to Destination Imagination’s Global Finals at the University of Tennessee in May 2017.

Winning first place in the Service Learning Challenge (Middle School Level) were FSA Students, Isra Hussain, Tanmaya Muvva, and Sanika Rane.

For the High School Level, Fine Arts Challenge, first place winners include Amisha Darji, Katarina Gurevich, and Zeynep Koker.

Through Destination Imagination’s Team Challenge Program, students work in teams to research, design and build a solution to their preferred challenge. Through this experience, children learn the creative process – a powerful learning tool that helps students assess problems, reflect, learn from failure and turn their original ideas into reality.

One FSA Team Challenge tasked members Amisha, Katarina, and Zeynep with trying to figure out how the world would look without a certain color. The ladies chose the color blue and portrayed how it would look if that color disappeared by using tri-chromatic vision (this occurs when the blue eye cone in your eye malfunctions). The team then took into consideration how individuals who experience tri-chromatic vision would see the world. People with this condition have a very specific color spectrum and FSA students identified where the differences were from people with a normal range of vision. Students were able to use any materials for this project; the girls were given a total of eight minutes to state and solve the problem and present their findings to the judging panel.

Another huge achievement during the state competition involved a separate FSA team, “The Lightning Ladies,” who walked away with the prestigious Renaissance Award. This is one of only three special awards distributed during the state finals. During each tournament, Destination Imagination can grant various special awards for solutions that were distinctive, or for anything which especially impressed the appraisers.

The Renaissance Award recognizes those among us who demonstrate extraordinary amounts of effort and preparation in their solutions or outstanding skill in engineering, design or performance. The award reads, “While the destination is creativity, these fellow travelers make the journey itself memorable.”

Destination Imagination, Inc. is a leading educational nonprofit dedicated to teaching students the skills needed to succeed in school, their careers and beyond. Fulton Science Academy students have the opportunity to participate in the program beginning in Kindergarten, all the way through Grade 10. The program, which is supported by thousands of participants across the country, develops project-based learning programs that blend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship.

Team members who would are attending globals will need to raise approximately $800 each to cover expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to support the participants, please log onto https://donate.fultonscienceacademy.org/donatenow.
