Fulton Science Academy Won 1st Place in 2017 Regional Science Olympiad Tournament

Fulton Science Academy Private School Science Olympiad Team students cheer as the team secures first place trophy in regional tournament!

FSA CHEERS AS SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM SECURES FIRST PLACE TROPHY IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT!

In the closest finish in tournament history, the Fulton Science Academy Science Olympiad Team took First Place Honors at the Regional Tournament held at the University of North Georgia, Gainesville Campus, on Saturday, February 18!

After all of the events were tallied, both FSA and archrival, Dodgen Middle School, were tied with 58 points each. Tie breaker rules call for the team with the most first-place event finishes to be declared the winner. Because of this, FSA won decisively with 11 first places versus Dodgen’s six.

“The awards ceremony was intense,” said head coach Gloria Stathos. "We were trying to track the scores, but there were three events in which we did not place, so it was impossible to calculate.”

Fellow Head Coach, Pam Walsh, continued...

“We had some unfortunate problems with a couple of our building events,” said head coach, Pam Walsh. “All week long, students had been coming to school early to practice flying their balsa aircraft. Our flight times were improving every day and we had high hopes for doing well. Then, two seconds into our competition flight, the propeller shattered and the plane plummeted to the ground."

She continued, "In Scrambler, our vehicle smashed into the wall on its first run, breaking our egg and making a second attempt impossible. Not knowing our placement in those two events made the team competition a real nail-biter. But in the end, our strong finishes in our many other events was enough to compensate and we won.”

In the end, “Every team member contributed to our victory,” said Mrs. Stathos. “Each of our thirty students earned at least one medal.”

The team now qualifies to compete in the GA State Science Olympiad Tournament to be held on March 18 at South Cobb High School where they hope to place in the top two teams and qualify for the National Tournament in May.
