George Washington Tomb guarded by SAR

On September 16, 2023, 27 Sons of the American Revolution Color Guardsmen from 8 states participated in the George and Martha Washington Tomb Vigil. National and Georgia Color Guard Commander K. Scott Collins led the group, with 3 other Georgia guardsmen including Craig Benton, representing Piedmont Chapter. In 2 or 4 man 15 minute shifts, the SAR Color Guard stood honor guard positions at George and Martha Washington’s Tomb at Mount Vernon. The Color Guard mustered at 7:45am, marched to the house for a photo at 8:30am and then proceeded to the Tomb for the day. We provided guards from 9am to 4pm. During the daily Mount Vernon Wreath Laying Ceremony, a member of the SAR Color Guard led the Pledge of Allegiance while Commander Collins emceed the ceremony. The Tomb Vigil is timed to coincide with the annual Mount Vernon Colonial Faire and crowds were large. We had many spectators during the 28 shift changes throughout the day. Commander Collins delivered a short speech at each shift change. Guardsmen that participate in the Tomb Vigil receive a Washington Tomb Guard lapel pin and also credit for their 250th Anniversary medals.
