Gwinnett Tech Postpones Alpharetta Campus Groundbreaking

Lows will dip down into the low 20s tonight and only reach the mid 30s on Tuesday in Alpharetta and north Fulton County.

Sub-freezing temperatures and wind gusts expected to move into Alpharetta tonight and into Tuesday have propelled Gwinnett Technical College to postpone the groundbreaking ceremony for its north Fulton campus.

The school made the decision to cancel the ceremony — originally scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 — “in light of inclement weather predicted for tomorrow and out of concern for the well-being of our guests,” according to its press release.

“We anticipate scheduling an event at a future date to give everyone a chance to celebrate the construction of our new North Fulton campus,” said Dr. Glen Cannon, president, Gwinnett Technical College.

Gwinnett Tech spokesperson Dana Urrutia added the wind gusts moving into the area tonight and tomorrow could create “some possible difficulties” with the tent and other equipment needed for the ceremony.

According to the National Weather Service, tonight’s low for Alpharetta and north Fulton County will dip into the low 20s while the highs for Tuesday will only reach the mid 30s.

Wind gusts tonight could be as high as 25 miles per hour. The wind speed on Tuesday is expected to range from 10 to 15 miles per hour.

Construction on the new campus along Old Milton Parkway at S.R 400 in Alpharetta starts this month.

The first campus building, one of three planned, is three stories with approximately 95,000 square feet and will include classrooms, labs and administrative space. When built out, it’s anticipated the campus could serve 10,000 students.

GTC has been serving north Fulton since 2010 and now offers continuing education, adult education and dual enrollment for high school students. Classes are projected to start in north Fulton in January 2016.
