Man Died In Custody After Scuffle With Police: GBI

Police used a taser on him, but he kept fighting. A short time later, he stopped breathing, police say.

WINDER, GA — A man died Saturday while in police custody, according to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Auburn Police Department had him under arrest for battery and cruelty to children, the press release says.

Auburn police were taking Charles Williams, 30, to the Barrow County Detention Center around 2:30 p.m. Saturday after he was arrested following a confrontation at 148 Greentree Dr. in Auburn.

"Williams became combative," the release said, as he arrived at the jail. Having moved his handcuffs from his back to his front, he was kicking the interior of the police car.

Police attempted to talk him out of the vehicle, but to no avail. They then went to remove him physically, and police had to use a taser. Regardless of the taser, Williams "continued to be combative and fought with deputies" after police used the taser.

The release says Williams kept resisting after police removed him from the car.

"After Williams was subdued, deputies reported he stopped breathing," the press release said. Police attempted to treat him until EMS arrived. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy on Tuesday at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur yielded no solid results.

The GBI is continuing the investigation. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, according to the press release.
