Mayfield Road Reopening Delayed Due To Site Issues

Soil quality issues have slowed the completion of retaining walls necessary to the project, the city of Alpharetta said.

ALPHARETTA, GA — Contractors building the new culvert on Mayfield Road have informed the city of Alpharetta that the opening of the road to motorists will be delayed by at least one week.

Alpharetta previously worked with the contractor to allow for extended construction hours which would move up the target date from July 27 to July 16.

"The primary issue causing the delay relates to soil quality issues that have slowed the completion of retaining walls necessary to the project," said Alpharetta Director of Public Works Pete Sewczwicz. "The contractor is having to replace a significant amount of soil, more than testing originally indicated, that will properly compact and support the retaining walls, and that takes time."

A tentative target date of July 23 is now being eyed, but Sewczwicz notes that this date is not set in stone.

"Over the course of this week we will have better information that will give us a better gauge as to if July 23 is a realistic date," Sewczwicz added. "We will provide an update at the end of the week."

The contractor is working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in an effort to fast-track the project. Mayfield Road is closed to through traffic between Bethany Road and Canton Street so the Foe Killer Creek culvert can be replaced. To get around the Mayfield Road closure motorists should detour along Mid Broadwell Road/Milton Avenue using either Bethany Road or Canton Street.
