Milton Log Cabin Moving to New Home

The FFA Log Cabin at Old Milton High School will be moved to a new site on Milton Avenue on Saturday, October 14. Celebration starts at noon

Saturday, October 14 is the long-awaited day for the move of the Old Milton Log Cabin to its new home. From the current location on the former site of Milton High School the Cabin will be relocated to a site just over 500 feet down Milton Avenue. The event will take place at the Alpharetta Masonic Lodge, 194 Milton Avenue beginning at noon.

The new site is part of a park purchased by the City to manage storm water and to bring a new street through from Marietta Street. Appropriately the street, Marjean Way, was named two years ago in honor of Marjean Birt, a Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society member. Marjean was very active in many things but her passion was preservation. In 1991, she brought together leaders from Roswell, Alpharetta and Herman Miller Corporation to save the Mansell House, then located on Mansell Road. It was relocated to Wills Park in Alpharetta.

Entertainment for the event will be provided by Almost Heaven Karla Walker, Michael Chapman and Randy Elkins. Randy is the grandson of Pearce Elkins who was sponsor the the FFA Club who built the Log Cabin.

The preservation of the Log Cabin, built by Milton students in 1934-35, the Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society has been accomplished through cooperation of the Historical Society, the City of Alpharetta and the Fulton County School Board. The Historical Society will host this event celebrating the move to the new site.

Over the past 2 years the Historical Society has campaigned to save the Cabin by getting commitments of more than $155,000 toward moving it to a new site. The site is the former home of Carroll and Louise Beavers who were both educators at Milton.

Some additional funds may be needed to complete the placement of the Cabin on a foundation at the site and to reconstruct the stone fireplace and porch. Donations to save the Log Cabin can still be made online at www.aomchs.org or by check to AOMCHS and mailed to 1835 Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30009.
