New Alpharetta Mayor, Council Members To Take Office

Jim Gilvin has been elected mayor of Alpharetta while Karen Richard and John Hipes are the new City Council members.

ALPHARETTA, GA — Alpharetta's newest mayor and City Council members will take their oaths of office early next week.

The oath for Mayor-elect Jim Gilvin and City Council members-elect Karen Richard and John Hipes will be given at the start of the May 29 City Council meeting, which gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at Alpharetta City Hall.

Gilvin, a former City Council member, defeated Chris Owen, another former Council member, in the May 22 special election. Richard edged out Katie Harding for the Post 3 seat while Hipes fought off a challenge from Clifford Martin for the Post 4 seat.

The office of mayor was vacated when David Belle Isle resigned to run for the Secretary of State position. The City Council seats were vacated with the resignations of Owen and Gilvin. Belle Isle and fellow Republican, Brad Raffensperger, will go head-to-head in a runoff for the statewide office on Tuesday, July 24.

Gilvin thanked his supporters for backing him over the last few months, and invited the public to attend the swearing in ceremony, according to his Facebook page. A 6 p.m. reception, he added, will precede the meeting and swearing-in ceremony, he added.
