ALPHARETTA, GA — The reason a man barricaded himself inside a house on Academy Street, blocking the area near downtown Alpharetta, turns out to be because there were warrants out for his arrest, according to a recently released incident report.

On Aug. 6, Academy Street was closed for nearly two hours due to a man barricading himself, the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said.

An officer assigned to the Community Response Team was patrolling the area of Academy Street when he passed a man he knew. After checking the man's information, the officer saw the man had active warrants through Alpharetta and Milton for theft and shoplifting, the police report said.

While this man was being arrested, he asked the officers notify his girlfriend and her brother.

When the brother saw the officers outside the home, he apparently ran and hid, the report said. Officers found out the man had been arrested in Florida before, and had two active, full-extradition warrants through Broward County as well as the Florida Department of Corrections for parole violation.

The brother then barricaded himself inside the attic, causing SWAT to be called to the scene. SWAT negotiated for several hours with the brother, causing Academy Street to be shut down for at least three hours.

The man finally emerged, and had to be taken to the hospital for dehydration.

The officer said in the report he will attempt to obtain warrants for 10 counts of misdemeanor obstruction of officers for hindering the law enforcement officers in their official duty capacities to include officers on the CRT, S.W.A.T, Traffic, and Patrol.
