The road will close between Mayfield Road and Church Street, and will remain inaccessible until early August, the city said in its press release.
Alpharetta is warning motorists that heavy travel delays due to the closure will most likely occur on Canton Street and S.R. 9, particularly during peak commuting periods.

“Canton Street has become a heavily used commuting corridor for motorists traveling to and from the city of Milton and portions of Cherokee and Forsyth counties,” the city said. “These commuters are strongly urged to identify and plan now to use alternative travel routes to avoid the downtown Alpharetta area.”
The closure will be implemented so the Fulton County Department of Water Services can construct the final segment of the Alpharetta Water Transmission Main project. The work involves the installation of approximately 3,400 linear feet of 30-inch Ductile Iron Pipe, and is divided into four segments.
The final segment is along Canton Street, between the intersections of Old Canton Street at Canton Street and Mayfield Road at Canton Street. The overall project consists of the installation of approximately 7 miles of water pipes and ancillaries in the cities of Alpharetta and Johns Creek.
The project is designed to improve the water system supply and pressure in north Fulton County and specifically, to bring a major transmission line to feed the northwestern portion of the county.
Fulton County is coordinating with residents who live between 117 and 212 Canton Street to ensure access to their homes throughout the construction project.
