Woman Charged With DUI After Nearly Hitting Kids On Sidewalk

Witnesses told Alpharetta police that a Ford Focus came close to hitting children inside North Park.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- A motorist accused of driving under the influence came close to striking children playing along a sidewalk in an Alpharetta park.

That's according to an incident report released by the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety, which shows police have charged Cumming resident Sylvia Rosalie Cox, 54, with DUI drugs less safe, reckless driving and striking an unattended vehicle in connection to the incident.

Officers were dispatched to a call of a driver possibly under the influence at 7:11 p.m. Sept. 6 to North Park on Cogburn Road.

The Miracle kids refer to members of the North Metro Miracle League, which runs an adapted softball league for special needs children and teenagers. The league plays games at North Park.

Those witnesses also told police the Ford Focus allegedly struck another vehicle, left the scene and was seen parked by the football fields at the park.

Officers arrived on the scene to find Cox standing in the middle of the parking lot in front of the football field.

According to the report, Cox told police she was "just out riding around." The officer also asked Cox about the accusations of driving on the sidewalk. Cox's response, according to the report, was "I don't remember that."

She also denied having any alcohol or taking any medications before getting behind the wheel.

The officer conducted several field sobriety tests and noted in the report that he felt "she was under the influence of drugs to the point she was a less safe driver."

Cox, who was placed under arrest, agreed to provide a blood sample and was transported to WellStar North Fulton Hospital for the procedure.

After that, Cox was booked into Alpharetta's jail and given a court date of 9 a.m. Oct. 18.
