12 Deaths, Over 500 New Coronavirus Cases Day After GA Reopening

As of Saturday at noon, there have been 12 more deaths and more than 500 new coronavirus cases since businesses have reopened in Georgia.

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia slowly reopened businesses such as hair salons, gyms and bowling alleys on Friday. Gov. Brian Kemp said that restaurants can follow on Monday. Even with Atlanta businesses opening their doors once again, the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths continue to rise.

As of noon Saturday, the growing toll of the coronavirus outbreak in Georgia included 12 more deaths, the Georgia Department of Public Health released in its daily report. The updated numbers reflect an increase of 548 cases from noon on Friday, bringing the total to 22,695 coronavirus cases statewide, and a total of 904 deaths. Of that total, 4,326 — or about 19 percent — are hospitalized. The total number of deaths from coronavirus recorded is about 4 percent of the total number of cases reported.

Most of the top 10 counties with the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths are in the metro Atlanta area, with Fulton County still first for cases with 2,509. Dougherty County, though, which has the third highest number of cases at 1,467 has the highest death count at 108.

Other counties in the top five are DeKalb at second, with 1,734 cases and 36 deaths; Gwinnett at fourth, with 1,421 cases and 46 deaths; and Cobb at fifth with 1,377 cases and 73 deaths. Rounding out the top 10 are Hall, Clayton, Henry, Cherokee and Sumter counties.

Of Georgia's coronavirus cases, 62 percent are between ages 18 and 59, while those above the age of 60 make up 34 percent. People up to age 17 represent 2 percent of cases, and the remaining percentage of cases have unknown ages.

Commercial laboratories have conducted 111,452 tests, and 21,351 came back positive for COVID-19. Among the Georgia Department of Health's 7,562 completed tests, 1,344 came back positive.
