18 Killed In Memorial Day Weekend Crashes
The Georgia State Patrol investigated five deaths and the 13 remaining fatalities were investigated by local agencies.

ATLANTA, GA -- More than a dozen people were killed over the Memorial Day travel period for 2017, the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday. The agency has released data on traffic crashes across the Peach State during the travel period, which began at 6 p.m. Friday, May 26 and ended at 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 29.
Statewide, state troopers investigated 414 traffic crashes that resulted in 204 injuries. These troopers also investigated five fatal crashes, which were reported in Fulton, Rabun, Dougherty and Baldwin counties.
Local agencies reporting traffic deaths during the holiday period were: Clayton County police, Gwinnett County police, Henry County police, Fulton County police, Bibb County Sheriff's Office, Columbus police, Atlanta police, Cobb police, Monroe County Sheriff's Office and East Point police.

In addition to crash investigations, Georgia troopers also arrested 262 motorists for driving under the influence during the 78-hour travel period.

For some perspective, in 2016, there were a total of 12 fatal crashes during the Memorial Day travel period. Five were investigated by state troopers and the remaining seven were investigated by local agencies, the state previously reported.
