Atlanta Connections Strong At Oscars

From "Moonlight" to "Hidden Figures," several films had links to Georgia's largest city.

ATLANTA, GA -- During Sunday's Oscars, Atlanta was represented in a big way on Hollywood's biggest night. Actors and actresses with Atlanta ties or movies filmed in the city were a huge part of the festivities.

Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Moonlight," which was partially filmed in Atlanta. The movie would also win "Best Picture."

Jeremy Renner of "Arrival," which won for Best Sound, spent multiple days in Atlanta over the past six months filming “Captain America: Civil War” and “Kill the Messenger.”

Singer Janelle Monae, who lives in Atlanta, was brought on stage to honor one of the women who inspired "Hidden Figures," which was also filmed partially in Atlanta. Ali also filmed scenes here.

Octavia Spencer, who was up for Best Supporting Actress for "Hidden Figures," lost out to Viola Davis for her stunning performance in "Fences." Watch her speech below.

“Hidden Figures” was also in the running for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Atlanta has been a moviemaking mecca for several years now, and the trend shows no sign of stopping. The area has several films and TV shows in production. And we're not just talking independent projects. The major Hollywood studios, along with CBS and other networks, have hired local talent and crew to put together high-end productions.
