Atlanta Schools Make Call On Wednesday Classes

Snow and dangerous wind chills were forecast for much of north Georgia late Tuesday going into Wednesday morning.

ATLANTA, GA — Atlanta Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 17, due to the weather.

"Due to the impending inclement weather, including bitterly cold temperatures and the potential for icy road conditions throughout the metro Atlanta area and in coordination with city and state officials, the National Weather Service, and surrounding school districts, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has cancelled school and all after school activities for Wednesday, Jan. 17," the school system said on its website Tuesday night.

All campuses and the school district office will be closed, according to the post.

On her Twitter account, schools Superintendent Meria Carstarphen confirmed the closures.

"Single digit temps & icy roads = unsafe 4 kids & staff," she wrote.

Snow had begun falling in parts of metro Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon and the forecast called for more snow and dangerous wind chills.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a winter weather advisory starting at 5 p.m. in most of metro Atlanta. And, at 9 p.m., a wind chill advisory goes into effect, when the temperature could drop to 15 degrees and gusty wind could make it feel as low as -5 degrees in some parts of north Georgia.

Earlier Tuesday, Atlanta schools had canceled all after-school activities.
